Tech Suits for 12 & Under Swimmers
What every swim parent needs to know about the USA Swimming tech suit ban for age-group swimmers.
USA Swimming Rule 102.8F
“No Technical Suit may be worn by any 12 & Under USA Swimming athlete member in competition at any Sanctioned, Approved or Observed meet.”
Effective September 1, 2020. The only exceptions are national championship events (Junior Nationals, U.S. Open, Olympic Trials).
What makes a suit a “tech suit” under this rule?
A suit is banned for 12&U if it has either of these:
Banned
Bonded or taped seams (any fabric, any length)

Woven fabric extending past the hips
Quick check:If the suit has a World Aquatics (FINA) logo, it's presumed banned for 12&U unless it also has the USA Swimming green checkmark.

Best Racing Suits for 12 & Under
These comply with the 12&U rule while still being a real step up from a practice suit. You don't need a tech suit to race fast.

Why Did USA Swimming Ban Tech Suits for 12 & Under?
Economic equity
$200–$400 suits created pressure on families. Age-group swimming already costs $3,000–$8,000+/year — tech suits were an unnecessary additional cost at this level.
Technique development
Compression holds the body in position, which can mask stroke problems. Coaches want young swimmers to develop proper technique without artificial help.
Psychological health
Young swimmers were becoming dependent on the “suit boost” for confidence. The ban encourages trusting training over equipment.
12&U times don't predict success
Research shows 12&U times have little correlation with senior-level performance. The performance boost of a tech suit serves no long-term purpose at this age.
Practical Advice for 12&U Swim Parents
Ages 10 and under: skip the racing suit entirely
A good practice suit (Speedo Endurance, Arena MaxLife) is all they need. Focus on technique and having fun.
Ages 11–12, regular meets: practice suit
Save the racing suit for when it matters. Dual meets and invitationals don't need special gear.
Ages 11–12, championship meets: one mid-tier racing suit
Arena ST 2.0 or R-EVO ONE. Budget $60–$130. One suit per championship season. This is the sweet spot.
Size for the meet, not for growth
Buy 3–4 weeks before the target meet. A racing suit that's too loose is just an expensive practice suit. Accept that it may not fit next season.
Teach suit care from day one
Rinse in cold water immediately, air dry flat, never wring. Good habits now save money when they're 14 and wearing $300 suits.

Can my 12-year-old wear a tech suit at any meet?
Only at national championship events (Junior Nationals, U.S. Open, Olympic Trials). At all other USA Swimming sanctioned, approved, or observed meets, tech suits are banned for 12&U.
How do I know if a suit is banned?
Check for bonded/taped seams or woven fabric past the hips. The quick test: if it has a FINA/World Aquatics logo without a USA Swimming green checkmark, it's probably banned.
Will my swimmer be DQ'd for wearing a tech suit?
Yes, officials can disqualify a 12&U swimmer for wearing a prohibited suit. Check your suit against the USA Swimming approved list before race day.
Is the Arena Powerskin ST 2.0 a tech suit?
No. Despite the 'Powerskin' name, the ST 2.0 uses sewn seams and knit fabric, making it compliant with the 12&U rule. It's one of the most popular approved racing suits.
How much faster is a racing suit vs a practice suit for a 12&U swimmer?
Expect roughly 0.5–1.5% improvement — mostly from better water repellency and the psychological boost of wearing a 'fast suit.' For a 12-year-old swimming a 1:10 100 free, that's about 0.5–1 second.
Should I buy my 11-year-old the same suit as a 15-year-old?
No. 12&U swimmers can't legally wear most suits that 15-year-olds wear. Stick to approved racing suits (Arena ST 2.0, R-EVO, Speedo Vanquisher). They're also cheaper and more durable.
