How selection works

  1. 1Eight swimmers per gender, per age group, go to the Pacific Coast All-Star Meet each January against Southern California, Pacific and Oregon.
  2. 2Up to four spots per group are automatic: win the 100 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast or 100 Fly final at the December 14 & Under PNS Champs. Winning more than one event still only fills one spot.
  3. 3The remaining spots go to the highest total of a swimmer's best 6 USA Swimming Power Point scores across their age group's 12 scoring events.
  4. 4An application is required — including for automatic qualifiers. Win an event and skip the form, and the spot passes to the next swimmer on Power Points.

Qualifying period: September 1 through the December 14 & Under PNS Champs. Times count in short course yards.

Questions parents actually ask

Do you have to apply to make the PNS All-Star team?
Yes, and that includes automatic qualifiers. If a swimmer wins one of the four qualifying events at December Champs but never submits the application, the spot goes to the next swimmer on the Power Point rankings.
What are Power Points?
A USA Swimming score that converts a time into points on a curve specific to the event, course, gender and the swimmer's age. It lets a 50 free and a 500 free be compared on one scale. Because the curves are age-adjusted, an 11-year-old scores higher than a 12-year-old for the identical time.
Which events count for the 11-12 age group?
The 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle; 50 and 100 backstroke; 50 and 100 breaststroke; 50 and 100 butterfly; and the 100 and 200 IM. Your best six Power Point scores across those twelve events are added together.
When does the qualifying period close?
Times count from September 1 through the December 14 & Under PNS Championships. The application closes in mid-December and the meet is the following January.
