How selection works

  1. 1Twelve swimmers per gender, per age group, represent Team PN at the Western Zone Age Group Championships each August, plus two alternates.
  2. 2Every applicant is ranked inside each long course event of their age group's event list. Rank converts straight to points — 1st is worth 1 point, 10th is worth 10.
  3. 3Each swimmer's six best (lowest) event ranks are added together. The twelve lowest totals make the team; 13th and 14th are alternates.
  4. 4Ties at the cut are broken on count of AAA times — long course first, then short course yards, then short course metres.
  5. 5A AAA time is not required to be selected, but the Zones meet uses the AAA standards as its own qualifying times, and teams have a limited number of slower-than-AAA entries.

Qualifying period: July 1 through the end of that age group's PNS long course Champs. Times count in long course metres only.

Questions parents actually ask

Do you need a AAA time to make the PNS Zones team?
No. A AAA time is not required for selection or to swim the meet. But the Western Zone Age Group Championships use the AAA motivational standards as their qualifying times, and each team gets a limited number of slower-than-AAA entries, so PNS strongly encourages swimmers with AAA times to apply. AAA count is also the first tiebreaker at the cut.
How is the PNS Zones team scored?
Every applicant is ranked inside each long course event of their age group's list. Rank converts straight to points — 1st is worth 1 point, 10th is worth 10. Each swimmer's six best ranks are added, and the twelve lowest totals make the team.
Do short course times count for Zones?
No. Only long course metres times count toward the ranking. Short course only appears in the tiebreaker, where AAA times are counted long course first, then short course yards, then short course metres.
How many swimmers make the team?
Twelve per age group per gender, across 10 & Under, 11-12 and 13-14. The 13th and 14th ranked swimmers are named alternates.
